يتضمن الكتاب قراءة مفصّلة لكيفية تشكُّل المفهوم الحديث للمجتمع بوصفه كيانًا موضوعيًا ابتداء من عشرينيات القرن التاسع عشر. فقد فسّر علماء الاجتماع ذاتيات البشر وسلوكياتهم على أنها نتائج للمجتمع. مع ذلك يُظهِر البحث التاريخي أن المفهوم الحديث للمجتمع ليس أكثر من وسيلة ذات صبغة تاريخية عَرَضِيّة لتصور العالم البشري وإضفاء معنى عليه.
يقسّم المؤلف منظّري علم الاجتماع إلى فئتين: الأولى ظهرت في عشرينيات القرن التاسع عشر ويمثلها أوغست كونت، والثانية نشأت في أربعينيات القرن نفسه ويمثلها ماركس وإنغلز. ثم يعرض خصائص هذا المنظور النظري والإبستيمولوجي الجديد، محاولًا في الوقت ذاته إبراز علاقة هذا المنظور بالتحولات الاجتماعية والاقتصادية والسياسية المرتبطة بالنظام الليبرالي، وكيف ساهم شعور هؤلاء المنظّرين بالإحباط مما اعتبروه فشل التوقعات السياسية لهذا النظام في تقويض مسلّماته النظرية والإبستيمولوجية ذات الطابع الفرداني، ولا سيّما مسلَّمتَي الفرد والطبيعة البشرية، ليقدّموا بديلًا نظريًا يرتكز أساسًا على مفهوم جديد للمجتمع باعتباره كيانًا موضوعيًا مستقلًا عن إرادة الأفراد ورغباتهم وأفكارهم.
