Salah satu ajaran yang dikenal dalam penghayat kepercayaan adalah ajaran kapribaden. Kapribaden merupakan sebuah laku spiritual dengan memulai mengenal diri sendiri sebagai manusia, tujuannya dengan mengenal diri sendiri lebih dulu baru akan bisa mengenal Tuhan Yang Maha Esa. Dalam ajaran kapribaden bahwa urip (sukma sejati, nyawa atau roh) merupakan asal usul Ilahi dan tujuan akhir manusia adalah kembali kepada hakikatnya yang semula yaitu manunggal (bersatu) dengan Tuhan. Ajaran kapribaden mengajarkan bagaimana untuk mengenal urip dan mengabdi kepada urip, karena raga manusia mayoritas memperbudak urip, sehingga kehidupan menjadi rusak. Dalam ajaran kapribaden manusia terdiri dari raga dan urip, karena urip berasal dari Tuhan Yang Maha Esa atau urip cenderung ada sifat zat Tuhan sehingga apabila seseorang mampu mengenal urip yang ada dalam diri sendiri, maka dalam kehidupan sehari-hari akan selamat dan tentram dilindungi oleh urip-nya. Kemudian pada saat meninggal dunia raga akan segera lebur kembali ke asalnya yaitu tanah, air, hawa dan api sedangkan urip akan langsung manunggal dengan Tuhan (mencapai Kasampurnan jati atau moksha).
