《電影的臉》嘗試帶入侯孝賢、李安、蔡明亮的影像創作，讓他們不再侷限於台灣電影或華語電影的範疇歸屬，不再羈絆於歷史記憶或地理政治的詮釋框架，而能成為啟動「電影─哲學」思考的影像風暴，成為瞬間夾風雷閃電伏襲而來的「侯孝賢風暴」、「李安風暴」、「蔡明亮風暴」。本書希冀讓電影非電影、哲學不哲學，以便給出一種新的「電影─哲學」，一種創造生成的流變思考與虛擬威力。

本書針對「畫外音」、「高幀」、「慢動作」、「長鏡頭」、「正╱反拍」、「淡入╱淡出」、「默片」七個電影術語，進行「微概念」的操作，企圖將其「翻新」為截然不同的影像思考與美學感受。全書分為七章，主要集中探討侯孝賢、李安、蔡明亮的晚近電影文本，藉此啟動台灣電影之「外」的思考，既指向國家疆域與國族範疇界定之外的外人、外片、外資，更指向哲學概念的「域外」，一個具虛擬創造力的「外」，讓電影－哲學的發想過程，得以成為思考風暴「域外」之力的捲入翻出，既是以「電影術語」來重新啟動台灣電影書寫，亦是翻新「電影術語」本身所可能帶出的影像思考，而得以讓台灣電影持續「流變－異者」、出乎意「外」。
