日本人離開公司回家之前總會去居酒屋喝一杯；歐洲文化人去咖啡店待一整天；學生下課去的圖書館或者麥當勞，這些都是屬於「非正式社交場所」的「第三場所」。之所以稱「第三」，是因為在我們日常生活中，最多時間（第一）是在家庭，次之（第二）是在辦公室或者學校，在這之外，就是本書所說的「第三場所」。在此書之前，這些第三場所可能被污名化成人們「逃離」、「躲避」、「浪費時間」的地方，此書以精彩的論辯與分析，為這些地方正名為對人類有益甚至是必要的場所，這本書不但成為眾多著名咖啡店的論述起源，也是許多空間設計的參考指標。

當維也納作家Peter Altenberg說出一再被傳頌的經典句：「我不在咖啡館，就是在往咖啡館的路上」，有沒有人想過為什麼？為什麼「咖啡館」不能改成「家」或者「辦公室」，除了這樣聽起來真的很不酷以外，其實背後有深層的理由。這就是這本書試圖一層一層釐清的，作者以當時美國都市構成沒有思考社區性為例如此說明：

「我們在家和工作地點之外，缺少有提供滿足感和社會凝聚力的第三場所，然而對很多人來說，第三場所正是美好生活的要素。人們的往來移動越來越局限在家和工作場所之間，這兩個領域變得絕對優先。社會大眾每天在『子宮般封閉溫暖的家』和『競爭激烈的職場』之間來來回回，如此限縮的日常生活形態，很容易喚起『想徹底逃離』的念頭。」

不知不覺，家與工作場所都是例行公事，角色明確，遇到的人不會有意外，話題固定黏膩。而在第三場所，沒預期會遇到誰，通常是心血來潮自願前往，有許多無意的對話，結局無法控制卻充滿驚喜，也就成為靈感與創作力的來源。

作者雷．歐登伯格 (Ray Oldenburg [April 7, 1932 – November 21, 2022]) 為美國著名都市社會學家，因為本書一戰成名，終身（在酒館？）持續思考相關議題，除本書之外，另外有續作《同慶第三場所》（Celebrating the Third Place）、《品酒的愉悅》（The Joy of Tippling）（附下酒菜食譜）。

因為意識到身處的美國社會發展缺了許多公共空間的思考，作者因此開是研究全世界非正式社交空間的研究，以此延伸到「社區性」等面向。

全世界的空間與進程多向美國看齊，例如汽車主導的交通規劃、有效率的工作方式，這些雖然在近年慢慢受到反彈，本書也許是學術上用最慵懶的方式，在小酒館系統地說出另外一個值得採取的世界觀。
