本書分為文獻編與經學思想編兩部分。文獻編部分除一篇撰寫目的在重新檢討《四庫總目》殿本與浙本的關係之外，其餘各篇均在探討現存於世的各種提要與《四庫總目》稿本的編纂時間與文獻價值，試圖藉此建立各種提要的先後順序與《四庫總目》稿本的年代系譜，為未來進一步比較各階段稿本的異同預作張本。經學思想編部分則以探討《四庫總目》定本的經學觀為主要目的，藉以瞭解此書在“漢宋對峙”的核心觀念下，如何闡釋各種經書討論的主要問題。
