本书是“卓越工程师培养计划”研究课题的重要成果之一。全书按照普通高等院校物联网专业本科生的教学要求，并根据“物联网概论”课程教学纲编写而成。本书共分为7章：第1章为绪论，对物联网的由来、定义、发展概况、架构、关键技术及应用领域进行了简要介绍：第2章介绍了物联网架构及发展动力，包括感知层、网络层和应用层三层架构，并介绍了基于三层架构的扩展架构，还从政府、工业界、教育界和应用需求几个方面介绍了物联网的发展动力；第3章主要介绍了感知层的两大支撑技术一一传感器和RFID技术，还介绍了其他相关感知技术：第4章重点介绍了物联网网络层中最为重要的无线通信技术、移动通信技术和无线传感器网络技术；第5章介绍了应用层，作为与终端用户直接打交道的物联网的最高层，它必须与行业结合得非常紧第6章介绍了物联网的应用前景及面临的挑战，最后展望了其未来；第7章为实验章节，供有实验条件的学校参考使用。本书每章之后附有习题，可用于学生日常学习时检验自己的学习情况或教师在教学过程中布置练习时使用。本书可作为普通高等院校《物联网概论》或《物联网应用与技术》等相近课程的教材，也可供物联网、计算机及相关专业的教学人员、科研人员或相关人员使用。高职、高专类学校也可以选用本教材，使用时可以根据学校和学生的实际情况略去某些章节。
