直观而言，中国社会可以分为“显性的”与“隐性的”两个层面。作为“另一个中国”，秘密社会，或曰地下社会，是“中国社会”的真实模拟。故而，我们在讨论宗教、民间文化与民间信仰以及社会变迁等问题时，尤其有必要着眼于那些不为人知的社会集团及其信仰取向。民间教派、秘密教门、“邪教”之类，都属民间宗教结社，在中国，最早起源于道教、佛教等宗教的异端教派。这种因宗教异端而形成的“邪教”或秘密宗教，在中国社会之蔓延，一直持续至元末白莲教形成、红巾军起义爆发、元亡明兴为止；其后，进入比较正规意义上的明清秘密宗教发展时期；在民国以后，这些教派被泛称为会道门。本书除了勾勒中国秘密宗教的发展线索以外，着重于对明清秘密宗教诸层面的分析论述。明清秘密宗教之形成，除了弥勒教、白莲宗、摩尼教等宗教异端教派的影响以外，明清时期三教合一思潮对秘密教门信仰的形成也有不可忽视的作用。明清时期的秘密教门，大多拥有自己的经卷（一般称为宝卷），多以杂糅儒释道三教与民间信仰的内容为其特色。
