《世界社会主义史丛书》第三卷《社会主义制度：从一国到多国的演进（1917—1991）》以1917年11月俄国十月革命后产生的苏维埃俄国为肇始，社会主义由思潮、运动扩展到制度层面，社会主义社会成为现实。但是，现实的社会主义并非像马恩等社会主义思想家想象的那样，是建立在高度发达的资本主义国家基础之上的。恰恰相反，现实社会主义国家的前身，除个别的之外，都是资本主义不发达、很不发达，甚至还不是真正意义上的资本主义国家建立的。不仅如此，第二次世界大战后出现的东欧社会主义国家还主要是由外力推动的结果，而非这些国家内部的必然发展。于是，落后的国家如何进行社会主义制度的建设，社会主义国家之间应当是什么样的关系，这两个问题一直萦绕着社会主义的实践过程。本卷着重解读了苏维埃俄国社会主义制度的初步确立，苏联社会主义模式的形成，大国关系和东欧社会主义国家的出现，东欧国家为何首先确立人民民主制度，苏联模式在东欧国家的推行，新中国对苏联社会主义模式的锁定，苏联共产党二十大及其对社会主义国家的影响，苏联东欧社会主义国家20世纪60——80年代的变革，苏联东欧社会主义国家的剧变，以及欧洲和其他地区国家对社会主义制度的探索。
