在生計方式、家庭規模、家庭觀念等不斷變遷的背景下，白族人“不招不嫁”的婚姻形式也經歷了從最初不被接受到普遍被村民接受的過程。本書圍繞“不招不嫁”雙方家庭之間的無限博弈展開論述，其中婚後孩子的姓氏選擇是“不招不嫁”婚姻中最核心的問題。孩子姓氏的選擇既是“不招不嫁”帶來的結果，也是人們嘗試通過這種方式來解決雙方家庭的繼嗣問題，以保證祖蔭的延續。當然，“不招不嫁”也帶來了如家庭認同感缺失、因孩子姓氏爭執導致家庭不和等問題。
