中國共產黨領導的新民主主義革命，取得全國範圍勝利以後，如何在中國建設社會主義，這是馬克思主義書本沒有也不可能回答的問題。怎樣正確對待中國資本主義？從1949年迄今六十多年的歷史，由建設新民主主義到建設中國特色社會主義，毛澤東、劉少奇、鄧小平先後做出了各自不同的貢獻。本書主要論述了劉少奇對新中國道路的探索。把資本主義剝削與封建剝削嚴格區別開來，充分估計在人民民主政權的條件下，資本主義發展對新民主主義建設的積極作用；把農村兩極分化的出現、資本主義的發展，看成是新民主主義社會不可避免的必然現象，對社會生產力的發展是有利的。共產黨和人民政府對於這種階級分化和社會分配不公，可以採取經濟的和行政的手段去進行調節。如果企圖人為地去阻止和壓制資本主義的發展，將造成社會生產力的破壞。這是劉少奇所闡述的關於正確對待資本主義剝削的基本思想。 當我們把劉少奇關於如何看待資本主義剝削的理論觀點放到馬克思主義中國化的高度去考察，不難看出它既是對毛澤東新民主主義理論重要內容的深化，又是鄧小平有中國特色社會主義理論重要內容的認識基礎。這就是站在毛澤東和鄧小平之間的劉少奇，在探索新中國之路，把馬克思主義中國化的獨特貢獻。
