Description
西班牙内战是奥威尔第一次亲临体验战争的残酷和萧条，为他以后作品的反战基调奠定了基础。可以想象，从未涉足政治的文人奥威尔面临残酷的意识形态斗争和政治的党同伐异时内心的彷徨、无助和绝望。在目睹了许多曾经在前线共同作战的友人没有战死在前线，却死于自己人的迫害之后，奥威尔对苏联的政治体制产生了怀疑，从此走上了反对极权体制的道路。从这个意义上说，是西班牙内战这个熔炉促使奥威尔的创作热情和才华从控诉外在的世界表象的不公转向了对内在的体制和人性进行深刻反思。而共产国际、西班牙政府与英国媒体对西班牙内战的歪曲描写和为达目的操纵宣传工具的做法促使奥威尔开始思考历史的真实性，并在《一九八四》中升华为对极权主义操纵历史手法的反思。1946年，奥威尔写道：“自1936年后，我所进行的严肃创作的每一行话，都是在直接或间接地反对极权主义体制，并为民主的社会主义体制鼓与呼。”
