本书的读者对象是热心于心理助人服务并有一定心理学基础的专业本科生或研究生。对广大的心理学爱好者而言，本书也是一本较好的应用心理学教程。本书具体写作分三部分：第一部分(第1~第5章)为心理咨询的基本概念和基本技能，包括心理咨询概述、心理咨询目标与原则、心理正常与心理异常、心理咨询的过程、心理咨询的会谈技能、心理咨询模式与工作框架等内容。第二部分(第6~第14章)为各个不同心理学流派关于心理咨询(治疗)的基本理论和策略，包括精神分析疗法、以人为中心疗法、行为疗法、认知一行为疗法、现实疗法、家庭系统疗法、森田疗法、意象对话疗法、格式塔疗法、后现代主义疗法等多种疗法。第三部分(第15章)简要概述了团体咨询的基本理论和实施技巧、方法及其应用，以便对整个心理咨询体系有一个系统全面的了解。
