本书以作者的博士论文为基础修订而成，主要内容包含上下两篇，上篇从1978年讲起，分1978-1989、1990-1997、1998-2007三个阶段，回顾建筑批评在不同时代的实践历程；下篇则侧重分析建筑批评传播图景的偏向并进行反思。整体以时间轴为主要脉络，以场域为观察视角，以特征的出现与典型事件的考察作为重要节点，以点及面式地对当代建筑批评在传媒中的传播图景进行描述与分析，以此勾勒出不同时期建筑批评与传媒的关系及其传播特征。
