Když se mladá vdova Elsie přestěhuje na venkovské sídlo svého zesnulého manžela Ruperta Bainbridge, čeká ji kromě chladného přijetí od služebných a nekonečných hodin osamění i temné překvapení. Postupně chápavému doktorovi Shepherdovi odkrývá svůj příběh, ve kterém se prolíná lidské zlo s běsy dávné minulosti. Uvěří doktor jejímu příběhu a uchrání ji od oprátky?
