Skotský ostrov Lewis je krásné, ale drsné odlehlé místo bez stromů, bičované větry a pokryté vřesovišti. Topí se tam rašelinou a mluví gaelsky. A snad jen strach lidí z Boha je tam silnější než starost o živobytí. Pod zástěrkou víry však přežívají staré pohanské hodnoty a prapůvodní touha po krvi a pomstě. Na ostrov přijíždí nedávnou ztrátou syna poznamenaný policejní detektiv Fin Macleod, jenž se má podílet na vyšetřování brutální vraždy, spáchané podle stejného scénáře jako vražda, jíž se zabývá v Edinburghu. Fin prožil na ostrově Lewis dětství, takže vyšetřování je pro něho zároveň cestou domů a do minulosti. Setkává se s dávnými kamarády, s Artairem, který si vzal Marsaili, Finovu první lásku, a s mnoha dalšími. Většina z nich ho však nevítá s otevřenou náručí. Fin netuší, že klíč k případu by mohl odemknout i dveře, za nimiž je ukryto tajemství, jež se bezprostředně týká jeho samého. Jakou roli v případu hraje Finova dávná účast při tradiční výpravě na lov terejů hnízdících na nepřístupné nebezpečné skále An Sgeir? Povede tragédie, jež se tam tehdy odehrála, i po všech těch letech k další oběti?
