"The British Conquest and Dominion of India was a historical episode falling within fairly definite dates. It ended, without doubt, on August 15, 1947, when India and Pakistan were declared independent. Its beginning cannot be fixed with quite the same certainty. It is generally dated from the battle of Plassey, June 23, 1757, which made the British the potential masters of Bengal. But they did not immediately realize their power or exploit it to the fullest, and it was not until 15 years later that they began to govern the province themselves.
