Łowca orchidei jest powieścią o dwóch miłościach – pradziada i prawnuka uczuciach rozgorzałych w dwóch wiekach i dwóch Amerykach. Bohatera i współczesnego łączy biografia. Obaj są wygnańcami politycznymi i obaj popełniają to samo szaleństwo, wiążą się z córami Nowego Świata – jeden we współczesnym Chicago, drugi w dziewiętnastowiecznej Nikaragui. Akcja powieści rozgrywa się zarówno w Polsce, jak i w Stanach Zjednoczonych. Powieść oparta jest na autentycznych , często rodzinnych dokumentach. Pradziad autora był bowiem uczestnikiem wielkiej Gorączki Złota w Kalifornii w latach 1845-1850 i wydał w Londynie swe memuary. Przez strony powieści przewijają się łowcy orchidei i łowcy niewolników, poszukiwacze złota, jest polska mafia sandwiczowa, wielki amerykański biznes, miłość i morderstwo, jest polskie getto i bunt przeciwko Ameryce. Wszystko to kończy się niebywale. To opowieść o kochankach Ameryki tragikomiczna i realistyczna. Stanisław Esden-Tempski Powieściopisarz, poeta i dziennikarz, urodzony w Gdańsku w rodzinie o kaszubskich tradycjach. Studiował psychologię na Uniwersytecie Warszawskim i filologię polską na Uniwersytecie Gdańskim. Już od czasu swego głośnego debiutu – tomu wierszy pt. "Wytrwale rozwijam swe złe skłonności" wzbudzał kontrowersje i zainteresowanie. Powieści "Kundel" i "Łowca orchidei" ukazały go jako oryginalnego prozaika.
