Autorzy zwracają uwagę na sytuację, w jakiej znalazł się człowiek XXI wieku, żyjący w ogromnym chaosie, kryzysie wszelkich wartości. „Człowiek nowoczesny” niemalże na co dzień przeciwstawiający się życiowym trudnościom, cierpieniom, stratom, bezustannie szuka sensu życia. Obecne czasy to ucieczka od rozumnego i głębszego myślenia z zaniechaniem szukania odpowiedzi na fundamentalne pytania dotyczące celu ludzkiej egzystencji. Coraz bardziej szerzy się postawa rezygnacji, pasywności i brak odwagi szukania prawdy. Starzejący się samotny, opuszczony nawet przez najbliższe osoby człowiek popada w depresję, która może prowadzić nawet do samobójstwa. Wobec zbliżającej się śmierci nasila się niepokój i konieczność odpowiedzi na pytanie, czy życie w ogóle ma sens czy jest po prostu absurdalną tragedią nicości.
