„Nowa Cyganeria” jest specyficznym obrazem ostatniej epoki w naszej historii, choć przedstawionym nie do końca na poważnie. Pewne wątki zostały celowo przejaskrawione, przyjmując formę czystej satyry. Tu i ówdzie pojawiają się fakty mające potwierdzenie w rzeczywistości, ale sposób ich przedstawienia daleki jest od realizmu. Niedoceniani artyści, zmęczeni cenzurą i wiecznym brakiem środków do życia tworzą armię cieni i doprowadzają do wyludnienia miast. Po latach powracają na rodzime ziemie i zakładają samowystarczalną osadę, wolną od wszelkich instytucji i środków nacisku. Osiągają upragnioną demokrację, możliwość samostanowienia, absolutną wolność słowa i poglądów. Ale czy o to chodziło? Czy ta autonomia, samowystarczalność i życie zgodne z dziką naturą i jej prawami okażą się lepsze niż wygodne i bezpieczne życie pośród wytworów cywilizacji oraz osiągnięć nauki i kultury? Mimo że pewne wątki powieści dotyczą zaistniałych zdarzeń, ich przedstawienie jest dalece metaforyczne. Bo tej powieści nie można traktować dosłownie, choć posiada ona filozoficzne przesłanie wydarzeń ostatniego ćwierćwiecza.
