La obra de Pedro Lombardo (ca. 1090-1160), objeto del Comentario de Santo Tomás, ofrece un capital patrístico bien ordenado, que el Aquinate sigue desarrollando y superando en la primera parte de este libro III en que comienza el tratamiento del retorno de lo creado a Dios. Se incluyen aquí las distinciones de la primera parte dedicada a La Encarnación del Verbo y la obra de la Redención (d1-d22) a la que seguirá, en una segunda parte, el tratamiento de Las virtudes en Cristo y en los fieles (d22-d44), pues sólo a través la redención, es decir, «cuando la naturaleza humana se haya unido a Dios mediante el misterio de la Encarnación», toda bondad creada y natural es capaz de retornar a su principio, de volver a su origen primigenio. El problema de la unidad en la persona de Cristo de dos naturalezas y sus consecuencias e implicaciones, no sólo es relevante a la hora de resolver las ambigüedades y errores que se plantean en la comprensión de la persona de Cristo, sino que también ofrecen interesantes aportaciones para una antropología, al plantear la relación y la diferencia entre persona y naturaleza humana.
