Pero su importancia no deriva de esta bien ganada preeminencia histórica, sino de que sus ideas continúan vivas, nos siguen dando que pensar y nos iluminan a la hora de intentar responder a muchos de los problemas a los que nos enfrentamos. Mill miraría con aprobación muchos de los avances de nuestras sociedades (por ejemplo, todo lo que tiene que ver con la emancipación de las mujeres), pero también consideraría que nos queda mucho que perfeccionar. Para una vida como la suya, dedicada como pocas a contribuir al progreso de la humanidad y extraordinariamente exigente a nivel intelectual, siempre habrá muchas cosas que conseguir y muchos defectos que eliminar.
