El amor y el desamor, la traición, la delación, la valentía, la castidad pecaminosa, la entrega llena de virtud...La peripecia de las gentes que nacieron, amaron y murieron en unos de los años más amargos de su historia, tan amargos como los que sufrieron los demás españoles en su afán por matarse unos a otros y que después, en la postguerra, pagaron con el miedo, la rebelión, los piojos y el hambre la desventura de su propio entierro. Gentes con historias entrelazadas y enredadas entre sí como los sarmientos y los humos donde se curan la cecina y los chorizos, en el espanto de los fuegos cruzados que tan a menudo descienden por las laderas de sus montes. El autor tiene la habilidad de hacer una verdadera creación narrativa de cada uno de los capítulos de la novela, de modo que podrían presentarse como relatos independientes, acertando a engarzar los personajes que hilvanan el relato hasta crear una narración total, uniendo todas las piezas del rompecabezas en un final sorprendente.
