Los fantasmas de mis abuelos, es una obra que se puede inscribir dentro del género de fantasía, aunque tiene notas de mitología y terror, así como referencias a cuentos populares clásicos de Libia. El libro se inspira en el mundo de la imaginación árabe beduina y las leyendas locales, a la vez que trata de rendir homenaje a las abuelas y abuelos que enriquecieron la vida de sus nietos cuando en el país no había demasiadas alternativas de ocio. La imaginación es la característica común a todos estos cuentos que en el pasado fueron muy populares en Libia. Los personajes de sus cuentos se enfrentan a fantasmas, brujas, diablos, monstruos y gigantes. También tiene cuentos de hadas, fábulas de animales, crónicas familiares y leyendas de la vida cotidiana.
