Los artículos incluidos en este volumen reflejan muchas de las direcciones y contextos en los que están evolucionando las historias contemporáneas de España actuales. En este sentido, el conjunto de las contribuciones emergen de un trasfondo común asociado a la historia social e incorporan, en mayor o menor medida, las corrientes internacionales asociadas al llamado «giro lingüístico» y la nueva historia cultural. Unas innovaciones que son especialmente pertinentes para los historiadores de la España contemporánea porque suponen un reto directo a la coherencia y legitimidad de las grandes narrativas históricas, especialmente aquellas derivadas de la modernización, tanto la liberal como la marxista. Los autores de los artículos que contiene esta recopilación tratan de negociar la tensión constante entre el análisis del pasado y los retos del presente.
