En los años del cambio del milenio aflora una tendencia cinematográfica de gran repercusión, sobre todo en el circuito internacional de festivales. Películas en las que abundan los largos movimientos de cámara, los paisajes desiertos y los personajes ensimismados, un "cine de la ausencia" cuyas raíces se pueden rastrear desde medio siglo antes en las imágenes de los campos de concentración; o más bien en la polémica filosófica y estética en torno a la representación del exterminio que culminará en "Shoah" (1985). La influencia de la película de Claude Lanzmann en los documentales posteriores es indiscutible (Chantal Akerman, Rithy Panh, James Benning), pero tampoco son ajenas a este debate las ficciones que experimentarán con formas similares (de Michelangelo Antonioni a Gus van Sant, pasando por Marguerite Duras o Tsai Ming-liang). Este libro rastrea estas dos genealogías que confluirán en los mismos años en que se produce la eclosión del cine digital y la globalización de la cinefilia.
