Ilusiones perdidas ocupa un lugar central en La comedia humana, el ambicioso proyecto literario de Honoré de Balzac. La novela está protagonizada por Lucien de Rubempré quien, tras abandonar Angulema en busca de su triunfo como poeta en París debe enfrentarse a la sociedad de la capital, especialmente a los usureros y estafadores del mundo editorial, que Balzac conocía de primera mano, construyendo así una ácida crítica de la vida cultural parisina. También aparece fielmente retratado el mundo del periodismo, recién nacido pero ya consciente de su inmenso poder, todo enmarcado en la situación política de Francia tras la Restauración. La novela se enmarca dentro del ciclo «Escenas de la vida de provincias», dedicado al retrato costumbrista de aquella sociedad francesa decimonónica que, aunque ya había vivido la Revolución, aún permanecía anclada en una jerarquización social casi estamental; una sociedad clasista compleja, marcada por el signo de la pérdida, la desilusión y el descubrimiento del mal. Aunque se publicaron de forma independiente, la obra se estructura en tres partes: Los dos poetas (1835), Un gran hombre de provincias en París (1839) y Los sufrimientos del inventor (1843). Novela de novelas, en Ilusiones perdidas se encuentran algunas de las páginas más perspicaces y profundas sobre la naturaleza humana que nos ha entregado la historia del género.
