El término imperialismo es desde sus orígenes, a medianos del siglo pasado, uno de los m ás complejos de definir. Pero, a partir de su difusión, se impuso el carácter de expansión ultramarina: el vocablo desde entonces sobreentiende el imperialismo colonial. Quizá porque durante el siglo XIX se lleva a cabo el fenómeno de expasión occidental más importante de la historia Expansión económica, política y cultural que tendrá en los imperios coloniales de Inglaterra y Francia sus dos componentes más significativos. La aprición de los modernos imperios coloniales introducirá numerosos cambios en la marcha de las relaciones tanto económicas como políticas. Y servirá para desarrollar una nueva conciencia nacionalista que alentará precisamente su desarrollo, influyendo poderosamente en la aprición de corrientes de pensamiento irracionalista muy extendidas, amparadas en planteamientos pseudocientíficos como es el caso del darwinismo social.
