Los Ayacuchos es la novena novela de la tercera serie de los Episodios Nacionales de Benito Pérez Galdós. En esta obra, Galdós vuelve de nuevo a la estructura epistolar que ya ha utilizado en otras novelas anteriores. Estamos en los años 1841-1843, y Fernando Calpena, protagonista de buena parte de las anteriores novelas de esta tercera serie, emprende la búsqueda desesperada de su amigo Santiago Ibero, a quien ya habíamos conocido en la anterior novela Montes de Oca, desde Madrid a Barcelona. Los Ayacuchos fue el sobrenombre que recibieron algunos de los militares que participaron en la batalla de Ayacucho (Perú, 1824) y que a su vuelta a España tuvieron un papel importante en la política patria durante el reinado de Isabel II. Concretamente, el ayacucho por excelencia fue el general Baldomero Espartero, duque de la Victoria, pieza fundamental en la victoria frente a los carlistas y posterior regente, tras la breve renuncia de la madre de Isabel, la reina María Cristina. El motivo de la búsqueda de Calpena es el encargo que Demetria, ya por fin su prometida, le hace como condición indispensable para poderse casar. Y todo ello con el trasfondo de la revuelta de Barcelona contra la política librecambista del regente Espartero, revuelta que será ahogada con el bombardeo de la ciudad desde Montjuïc, ordenado por el capitán general Van Halen. La novela acabará felizmente con la doble boda de Fernando y su amigo Santiago con Demetria y su hermana pequeña, Gracia, respectivamente.
