7 de julio es la quinta novela de la segunda serie de los Episodios Nacionales de Benito Pérez Galdós. En el año 1822, el gobierno liberal impuesto al rey Fernando VII a raíz de la sublevación de Riego se ve acosado a dos bandos tanto por absolutistas como por los radicales. Las fricciones entre la guardia y los milicianos son continuas, hasta que se produce una sublevación de la guardia rápidamente sofocada por las milicias ciudadanas. Como narra Galdós: "El rey era absolutista, el gobierno moderado, el congreso democrático, había nobles anarquistas y plebeyos serviles. El ejército era en algunos cuerpos liberal y en otros realista y la Milicia abrazaba en su vasta muchedumbre a todas las clases sociales". En medio de todos estos continuos altercados de unos y otros, nuestro héroe, don Salvador Monsalud, continúa protegiendo a la joven Soledad, la hija de don Gil de la Cuadra, conspirador absolutista a quien Salvador había salvado de la cárcel y de una muerte segura, a finales de la anterior novela El Grande Oriente. Soledad, "Solita", termina enamorándose del protagonista, el cual no le presta mucha atención, ya que la ve simplemente como una hermana; en cambio sí le interesa una antigua amante ya casada.
