El equipaje del rey José es la primera novela de la segunda serie de los Episodios Nacionales de Benito Pérez Galdós. El "equipaje del rey José" define irónicamente el botín que las tropas francesas robaron (obras de arte, joyas, muebles valiosos y, por supuesto, dinero) en su retirada de la Península ante el empuje de las guerrillas y el ejército mandado por Wellington, principalmente tras la batalla de Vitoria, uno de los últimos episodios de la Guerra de la Independencia. En esta segunda serie de los Episodios Nacionales el protagonista es Salvador Monsalud, que toma el relevo de Gabriel de Araceli en la narración de los sucesos históricos y ficticios. Salvador es un afrancesado, detalle con el que Galdós demuestra su hábil ironía para plantear el relato. Siguiendo a Monsalud seguimos el convoy de los franceses en su huída, acosados por todos los flancos por los guerrilleros y tropas regulares. El "francés" abandonaba definitivamente España. La brava lucha de guerrilleros y soldados (ejércitos español y británico) había dado finalmente sus frutos.
