Así discurría el alma, ascendiendo suavemente hacia el empíreo por campos de luz y praderías de estrellas. El solo hecho de no ser arrastrada al profundo abismo anunciaba ya la próxima beatitud. Subía, subía, sin esfuerzo, como si, por debajo de los brazos, la empujasen manos cariñosas. Eran, sin duda, los ángeles de su guarda, pues aquel alma creía tener más de uno, requisito sin el cual la santidad es doblemente difícil de conseguir. Descansando algún ratito en vellones de nubes, columpiándose en el anillo de un astro, el alma iba acercándose al luminoso centro del primer cielo, que gira en torno del segundo como rueda de oro incandescente. Y a la puerta de entrada de aquel brillante espacio, que era un arco gigantesco de fuego puro y fijo, el alma vio realmente a un ángel, sin duda el portero, de cuya voluntad dependía que se le franquease el ingreso en el paraíso. Llena de confianza se acercó el alma, suponiendo que no tropezaría con la menor dificultad; pero el ángel, no risueño y gracioso, sino severo y esclavo de la consigna, la detuvo con solo un blandir de la espada sinuosa que serpenteaba y centelleaba en su diestra. —Alto ahí —ordenó el vigilante—. No se pasa hasta que esté averiguado tu derecho. Aquí hay jueces de las almas. Vas a comparecer ante su tribunal. El alma, segura de sí misma, hizo una señal de aquiescencia, y al punto los jueces, vestidos de togas verdes y provistos de balanza y platillos, se presentaron, rígidos y en fila, en el umbral. —Habla, que te oímos —advirtieron a Cándido, que sin explicarse la razón, sintió un escalofrío leve a lo largo del espinazo.
