En 1834, Richard Henry Dana, estudiante de Harvard, hijo de un abogado, partía de Boston, como marinero raso, en el buque mercante Pilgrim rumbo a California por la ruta del cabo de Hornos. A su regreso escribiría Dos años al pie del mástil, con el propósito de «dar a conocer la vida del marinero corriente en la mar tal y como es: con sus luces y sus sombras». Lo cierto es que desde su publicación en 1840 la literatura del mar ya no pudo ser la misma: Dana estableció, de hecho, la pauta de un nuevo género, caracterizado por su realismo y autenticidad, y por el conflictivo desplazamiento de un narrador de formación culta y gentil a ambientes rudos y remotas regiones donde entra en contacto con una naturaleza primitiva y unos pueblos sin civilizar.
