El drama humano representado por este personaje que se debate entre la realidad y el deseado ha inspirado a muchos autores posteriores que lo han reescrito desde diversos enfoques aportando nuevas significaciones y valores. Partiendo de la exégesis de este mito literario en el contexto del Romanticismo europeo, el estudio desarrollado en esta monografía ofrece un análisis de los componentes de este mito y propugna una teoría de la reescritura en base a la cual se presentan, a continuación, las diversas modalidades que se ha adoptado en el ámbito de la novela inglesa del siglo XIX, con un énfasis especial en las obras de Jane Austen y Charles Dickens. La crítica cervantista abierta a la dimensión universal de Don Quijote se enriquece así con las aportaciones de la literatura comparad y de la mitocrítica.
