El mito literario de Don Quijote, creado por Miguel de Cervantes es una ópera magna, constituye un relato ejemplar en el cual las quimeras visionarias del personaje chocan con un entorno prosaico que frustra sus aspiraciones heroicas. Inspirándose en las caballerías, Alonso Quijano adquiere una nueva identidad justiciera que le lleva a defender un sabio humanismo expuesto en tres Discursos esenciales. A pesar de las derrotas los sinsabores que culminan en el desengaño final, don Quijote, se erige como un paladín de las causas de los nobles, el honor, el altruismo, la pujanza de los ideales y la lucha por los propios sueños, constantes no sólo de la literatura, sino de la propia vida. El drama humano representado por este personaje que se debate entre la realidad y el deseado ha inspirado a muchos autores posteriores que lo han reescrito desde diversos enfoques aportando nuevas significaciones y valores. Partiendo de la exégesis de este mito literario en el contexto del Romanticismo europeo, el estudio desarrollado en esta monografía ofrece un análisis de los componentes de este mito y propugna una teoría de la reescritura en base a la cual se presentan, a continuación, las diversas modalidades que se ha adoptado en el ámbito de la novela inglesa del siglo XIX, con un énfasis especial en las obras de Jane Austen y Charles Dickens. La crítica cervantista abierta a la dimensión universal de Don Quijote se enriquece así con las aportaciones de la literatura comparad y de la mitocrítica.
