Este arte no solo es rival de la naturaleza, la supera derrotando los ruinosos efectos del tiempo y de la muerte. La estética del Barroco analiza con rigor y minuciosidad los textos de aquellos autores que podemos considerar antecedentes inmediatos del arte y la literatura barrocos, pero es a los clásicos de la agudeza y el ingenio, de la nueva concepción de la belleza, Marino, Gracián y Tesauro, a los que presta mayor atención. Completa su estudio con un análisis de los autores y textos barrocos que se han ocupado de las artes visuales y de aquellos filósofos que ya en el siglo xviii desarrollaron algunas de las ideas centrales del barroco.
