La edafología nos enseña cómo utilizar el suelo para el máximo aprovechamiento de sus diferentes funciones. Es una ciencia aplicada que inspira las técnicas y prácticas más adecuadas para la consecución de tales objetivos. Pero también es una ciencia de fundamentos teóricos importantes que es necesario conocer para orientar con criterios seguros el trabajo de los técnicos y científicos. La ciencia del suelo, que se constituyó como tal hace poco más de cien años, tiene ya una historia rica en la que se fueron acuñando conceptos y métodos que sirvieron para interpretar el complejo comportamineto del suelo, con seguridad uno de los entes naturales de composición y dinámica más diversas y heterogéneas. Al principio, estos métodos y conceptos se tomaron de otras ciencias, pero poco a poco fue naciendo un cuerpo de doctrina propio y específico de la edafología que, hoy en día, la define y diferencia claramente de otras disciplinas.
