El Purgatorio de san Patricio es un auto sacramental de Calderón de la Barca relativo a la leyenda del santo irlandés san Patricio. Según la leyenda San Patricio pidió a Dios una prueba de la existencia del Infierno, el Purgatorio y el Paraíso. Y Cristo le mostró la entrada a una cueva en donde se podían observar los sufrimientos de los pecadores y la dicha de los justos en su paso al más allá. Allí el santo construyó un monasterio y cerró la puerta de acceso a la cueva, con la orden de permitir la entrada solo quienes lo desearan con fervor, tras someterlos a una serie de pruebas para tratar de disuadirlos.
