En No siempre lo peor es cierto Don Carlos, amante de Doña Leonor de Lara, encuentra de noche un hombre en el aposento de ella. Lo toma por su rival, y lo mata, arrebatado por los celos. Luego para salvar el honor de Leonor, se la lleva consigo. La considera culpable, y pese a ello, la protege. La trama de No siempre lo peor es cierto alimenta las sospechas de Carlos, y llena de dudas a los espectadores, hasta que al fin aparece la verdad en todo su esplendor. Carlos se convence de que Leonor le ha sido siempre fiel. Este drama nos admira por el desarrollo vigoroso de su relato y el ingenio delicado de su autor. Encanta también su argumento principal y los caracteres de Don Carlos y Doña Leonor, trazados con fuerza y gracia: Carlos, de nobles y magnánimos pensamientos, arrastrado, no obstante, por esas mismas cualidades a concebir sospechas injustas; Leonor, dulce y por afectuosa con él, que tanto la ofende.
