Sugerem, que escravos africanos de muitas sociedades começaram a forjar uma nova cultura já durante o pesadelo da travessia oceânica, a partir de uma compreensão comum e de crises compartilhadas, e que essa cultura tinha instituições, crenças religiosas e papéis de parentesco distintos.
