Description
I 1518 erklærer den danske kong Christian d. 2. krig mod Sverige for at knuse den svenske kongemagt og sætte den svenske krone på sit eget hoved. Den unge, svenske adelsmand Gustav Vasa bliver taget til fange af kongen og sættes i fængsel på Kalø Slot i Danmark, mens hans far flygter til Stockholm. I Gustav brænder et inderligt had til danskernes konge, og han er fast besluttet på at flygte. Sigøjnerdrengen Jerrik fortæller om en hemmelig udgang fra slottet, og også den dansk-svenske spion Gösta lover at hjælpe ham. Men den sadistiske ridefoged Kasper Klov opdager flugtforsøget, og Gustav er nu i endnu større fare. Kun da slotsherrens datter, den unge, smukke Birgitte, fatter medlidenhed med Gustav, begynder han at kunne se en udvej. Under vildsvinejagten i 1519 lykkes det ved Birgittes hjælp Gustav at flygte. Men kongens spioner lurer overalt, og det er svært at skelne mellem venner og fjender... Herta J. Enevoldsen (1915-1997) er en dansk forfatter og debuterede i bogform i 1972 med "København brænder", men havde inden da fået udgivet utallige noveller i ugeblade som f.eks. Hjemmet. Hendes romaner om store figurer i verdenshistorien, hvor romantik og historieskrivning går hånd i hånd, skaffede hende hurtigt en stor læserskare og cementerede hendes plads som en af Danmarks største børnebogsforfattere.
