SERENADE er fortællingen om den amerikanske sanger John Sharp, der med et kun sparsomt spansk ordforråd forsøger at begå sig i Mexico, hvor han opholder sig fordi stemmen - og dermed sangkarrieren - har svigtet ham i USA. Mødet med den betagende Juana Montes giver imidlertid Sharp mulighed for at genoptage karrieren i Hollywood og New York. Her forstyrres den skrøbelige orden, som John og Juana opbygger sammen, af dirigenten Winston Hawes pludselige tilbagekomst i Sharps liv. JAMES MALLAHAN CAIN (1892-1977), amerikansk forfatter og en af hovedskikkelserne bag den hårdkogte litteratur, der opstod i 1920'ernes og 30'ernes USA og tæller forfattere som Dashiell Hammett og Raymond Chandler. Cain fik sit litterære gennembrud med debutromanen Postbuddet ringer altid to gange fra 1934, med en rammende skildring af menneskets mørke sider. Cain forargede sin samtid med tabuer i alle afskygninger. Han lod således én af sine mandlige hovedpersoner optræde som biseksuel og udforskede i sine romaner dybt kontroversielle temaer som seksuel besættelse og grænseløs vold.
