Nogle år efter Anden Verdenskrigs afslutning rejser forfatter Karen Aabye med skib fra Southampton i Sydengland til Oporto og Lissabon i Portugal. Herfra sejler hun til Madeira og De Canariske Øer og bagefter tværs over Atlanterhavet til brasilianske Para og videre ned ad Amazon Floden. I "Skibet er ladet med" skildrer Karen Aabye turens mange oplevelser og møder med nye kulturer og mennesker. Karen Aabye (1904-1982) var en dansk forfatter og journalist. Karen Aaby debuterede i 1939 med romanen "Der er langt til Paris". Sidenhen udgav hun en lang række bøger, hvoraf Martine-serien (1950-54) er en af de mest kendte. Karen Aaby var en torn i øjet på den tyske værnemagt under 2. verdenskrig, og Gestapo endte med at sprænge hendes hus 'Kissum bakke' i luften. Heldigvis var ingen hjemme og huset blev genopbygget efter krigen. I 1946 skildrede Karen Aabye flere danske skæbner, der flygtede til Sverige i løbet af krigen.
