Wied giver et morsomt indblik i 1900-tallets Danmark, men under hans satiriske bid ligger en fortvivlelse. En desillusioneret pessimists forsøg på at håndtere livets meningsløshed med humor. Værkernes særlige konstellation af det tidstypiske og det almenmenneskeligt har sikret dem klassikerstatus og eviggyldig relevans.
