Zunächst machte er sich als Schauspieler in London einen Namen, verfasste dann jedoch auch selbst zahlreiche Dramen und legte so den Grundstein für seinen Erfolg. Shakespeares Theaterstücke, wie etwa „Romeo und Julia", „Macbeth" oder „Ein Sommernachtstraum" werden bis heute auf der ganzen Welt begeistert gelesen, aufgeführt und neu adaptiert.
