Christina Hesselholdt tager i sin nye roman fat i den gådefulde amerikanske gadefotograf Vivian Maier (1926-2009), hvis unikke fotografiske livsværk kun ved et tilfælde nåede offentligheden. Vivian Maier levede på overfladen en stilfærdig tilværelse som en kærlig, kontant og ilter barnepige for velbjærgede familier i Chicago og New York. Men i over fire årtier tog hun mere end 150.000 fotos, hovedparten med Rolleiflex kameraer. Billederne kom først for dagens lys på en auktion kort før hun døde forarmet og vist nok temmelig ensom. I en tid, hvor jegdyrkelse og selviscenesættelse når nye højder, udøver Vivian Maier en særlig fascination. Hvem var denne excentriske person? Og hvorfor forsøgte hun ikke at komme til at leve af sin kunst? I Vivian beskæftiger en hel flok af stemmer, inklusiv Vivians egen, sig med disse spørgsmål. Man følger Vivian gennem hendes opvækst hos en mildest talt dysfunktionel familie i New York og i Champsaur i Frankrig, og man følger hende som barnepige i Chicago og som fotograf på gaderne i de amerikanske storbyer og på landet i Frankrig. Det er stemmerne der bærer fortællingen frem, Vivians mors stemme, Vivians stemme, stemmen hos et af de børn hun passede og forældrenes stemmer. Og ikke mindst stemmen tilhørende den pågående fortæller, der holder trådene i fortællingen sammen og stiller Vivian nærgående spørgsmål.
