Det var mandag den 3. juni, men selv om det var en mandag, og han var blevet vækket midt om natten, ville kriminalkommissær Evert Bäckström altid betragte den som den bedste dag i sit liv. Den i egen optik uforlignelige og uimodståelige Evert Bäckström bliver til sin glæde kaldt ud til et gerningssted. En kendt advokat er blevet dræbt i sit hjem, men dødsårsag og dødstidspunkt står hen i det uvisse. Kriminalkommissær Bäckström og hans efterforskningsgruppe står tilsyneladende over for en vanskelig sag. En samling russiske ikoner, som advokaten har haft til salg, viser sig at være vigtig for sagen, ligesom en Pinocchio-spilledåse af helt særlig karakter. Sporene peger i flere og aldeles umulige retninger, og for Bäckström bliver det personligt, da han indser, hvor mange penge han selv har mulighed for at få ud af hele sagen. Samtidig har efterforskningsgruppen travlt med andre og mindre sager om en vanrøgtet kanin og en adelig kunsthandler, der har fået bank med et auktionskatalog. Det virker ikke, som om der kan være en sammenhæng mellem de tilsyneladende trivielle sager og mordet på advokaten — men efterhånden ser det alligevel sådan ud. Selv for Bäckström.
