Nella cronaca su vari media capita spesso di sentire parlare di personaggi assimilati a “apprendisti stregoni”, in quanto responsabili di conseguenze quasi sempre deleterie e di cui perdono involontariamente il controllo. Personaggi come questi sono sempre esistiti: il saggio prova a individuarne alcuni negli ambiti più vari, a raccontare le circostanze in cui questi apprendisti maneggiano la loro “formula magica”, che si tratti davvero di una formula chimica, o di una teoria, di un libro, di un’arma, di un farmaco, di un materiale, della folla o persino della sessualità, facendo talora scoperte inaspettate. Alla fine, l’autore prova a delineare le caratteristiche ricorrenti degli apprendisti stregoni, magari per poterli riconoscere, se si aggirassero tra di noi, imparare a starne alla larga o tentare di impedire che possano nuocere a loro stessi e soprattutto agli altri.
