Poeta, pittore e incisore tra i maggiori del Settecento, William Blake stupisce ancora oggi per la sua modernità. Interprete di una poesia d’avanguardia, egli infranse ogni schema tradizionale, nei versi come nella pittura, rivelando tutta la sua forza espressiva in un impulso “visionario” che raggiunge effetti di potente suggestione. Blake incarna con grande tensione la figura dell’artista-veggente che delinea in libri “profetici” un quadro esoterico dell’esistenza prepotentemente animato da simboli.William Blakenacque a Londra nel 1757. Studiò disegno e dopo aver lavorato come incisore presso vari librai, nel 1784 aprì un negozio di stampe, che ebbe scarso successo e fu costretto a chiudere dopo soli tre anni. Tra le sue maggiori raccolte di versi ricordiamo Canti dell’innocenza (1789), Canti dell’esperienza (1794), e i grandi “libri profetici” che contribuirono in modo determinante alla sua fama: Il matrimonio del cielo e dell’inferno (1790-1793), America (1793), Il primo libro di Urizen (1794), Milton (1804-1811), Gerusalemme (1804-1820) e Vola, o i quattro Zoas (pubblicato postumo). Morì nel 1827.
