«Ammesso che all’essere umano riuscisse di dominare il mondo della natura, allora l’essere umano non sarebbe più essere umano e il mondo non sarebbe più mondo». «Noi tutti oggi esistiamo e pensiamo nell’orizzonte della storia e dei suoi destini, ma non viviamo più nell’ambito del mondo naturale. Ci manca l’unico mondo, quello che è più antico e durevole degli esseri umani. Mondo e mondo umano non sono equiparabili. Il mondo fisico può essere pensato senza fare alcun riferimento all’esistenza degli esseri umani, ma nessun essere umano è pensabile senza il mondo». Scritti nella piena maturità, questi saggi ruotano intorno a uno dei problemi oggi più dibattuti: il rapporto con «la natura – intorno a noi e in noi stessi», come Orlando Franceschelli precisa nell’Introduzione, richiamando la cruciale critica teorica mossa da Löwith a Heidegger. Löwith analizza il passaggio dalla visione greca del cosmo fisico, frutto di un’indagine ammirata e rispettosa, alla concezione del mondo come creazione di Dio – esemplare il confronto con Teilhard de Chardin – e infine allo spaesamento o nichilismo cosmologico in cui precipitano la coscienza e le società moderne che, emancipatesi dalla fede nella creazione, riducono la natura a un mero oggetto da usare a nostro piacimento. Da questi passaggi è alimentata anche la prospettiva di progresso illimitato che invece Löwith invita a riesaminare con spirito critico: senza alcuna svalutazione degli avanzamenti compiuti grazie alla scienza e alla tecnica, e senza cedere al rassegnato fatalismo con cui ormai guardiamo a un progresso tecnologico che sentiamo incombere su di noi ma i cui effetti pratici riusciamo sempre meno a controllare. Ritenuto un’anticipazione quasi profetica anche da autorevoli teologi, oggi, a cinquant’anni dalla morte di Löwith, questo richiamo a riconciliare le nostre vite e la storia con la realtà naturale – col cosmo – di cui sono parte risulta ancora più utile: un richiamo filosofico, etico-politico ed ineludibile per comprendere le sfide del presente e fronteggiare l’epocale crisi ambientale e socio-sanitaria in cui ormai è coinvolto l’intero pianeta.
