La velocità è stata impressionante. Negli anni ottanta in Cina ancora si sudava per conquistarsi una bicicletta Forever o un orologio Diamante. Poi, in un lampo siamo a oggi: l’ex straccivendolo Li Testapelata diventa arcimiliardario presidente e può decidere di fare un giro nello spazio o radere al suolo un’antica città, e questo solo per costruire la sua nuova Liuzhen, tutta centri commerciali, luci al neon, palazzi svettanti. Il prezzo del successo, però, è un consumismo che corrode tutto, anche i legami che la Rivoluzione culturale con le sue aberrazioni, nonostante tutto, aveva contribuito a saldare. I fratelli si separano, le famiglie si sfaldano, gli ingenui soccombono e chi sopravvive deve fare i conti con “una desolazione incommensurabile”. Una commedia insolente e paradossale, ricca di avventure rocambolesche e trovate esilaranti, surreale e volgare, ma anche amara, come la vita in fondo è. Un libro importante.
