Campbell ha dedicato la vita al lavoro di editor, rinunciando a una carriera di scrittore nella quale aveva mostrato doti eccellenti in particolare con i cicli di Isole nello spazio e di Aarn Munro. Tra le ultime cose pubblicate come scrittore, prima di prendere la direzione di Astounding, il romanzo breve Who Goes There? (La cosa) del 1938 dal quale sono stati tratti diversi film.
